The practical layer: when to go, how to get around, what it costs, what to pack, and how to stay safe and respectful.
Month by month, state by state
October to April is the broad sweet spot. Green = best, amber = shoulder, red = monsoon or closures.

Air, rail and road
Guwahati is the hub for almost every trip. Fly in, then move by shared Sumo, private car, train or the occasional helicopter.
By air
Guwahati (GAU) connects the metros and now Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Paro, Bangkok and Singapore. Other airports: Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Silchar, Lilabari and Rupsi (Assam); Shillong; Itanagar, Pasighat, Tezu (Arunachal); Dimapur; Imphal; Aizawl; Agartala. Bagdogra is the gateway for Sikkim. Tezpur and Sikkim's Pakyong currently have no scheduled flights.
By rail
A Vande Bharat and a Vande Bharat Sleeper reach Guwahati. Aizawl (Sairang) joined the network in 2025. Dimapur, Agartala, Naharlagun and Silchar have trains; New Jalpaiguri serves Sikkim. Lines to Imphal, Kohima and Gangtok are still being built.

What a Northeast trip really costs
Per person, per day, on the ground (excluding flights). The single biggest line in the hills is the vehicle.
₹2,000–3,500 / day
Homestays and guesthouses, shared Sumos, local food. Doable across Meghalaya, Assam and Mizoram.
₹5,000–10,000 / day
Comfortable hotels, a private car with driver, safaris and permits. The typical couple's budget.
₹12,000–30,000+ / day
Heritage tea bungalows, wildlife lodges, river cruises and North-Sikkim 4WD packages.
Rough guides: homestays ₹800–2,500; mid hotels ₹2,500–7,500; a private car ~₹3,500/day; a Kaziranga jeep safari ₹3,000–4,500 per vehicle plus fees.
For clouds, hills and checkposts
- Layers — hill evenings are cold Oct–Mar; Tawang and North Sikkim need a proper jacket.
- Rain shell & quick-dry shoes — even in the dry season, especially in Meghalaya.
- ID, always — army checkposts are routine; carry your permit and a Voter ID/passport.
- Cash — 2–3 days' worth beyond district towns; ATMs run dry on weekends.
- Offline maps — download them; network drops on mountain roads and treks.
- A BSNL SIM if you're going remote — it often works where others don't.
- A power bank & universal essentials — long drives, few sockets.
- Modest layers for monasteries, churches, satras and Kamakhya.
Warm, safe, and worth a little care
The Northeast is among the safest parts of India for travellers. The real challenges are permits and mountain roads, not crime.
Stay safe
Everywhere except Manipur is welcoming and low-crime. Manipur is calmer since early 2026 but foreign advisories still counsel caution — check before planning. Respect monsoon road advisories in Sikkim and Arunachal, and drink only bottled or filtered water.
Travel respectfully
Ask before photographing people, especially tribal elders. Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites and remove shoes. Sundays are quiet in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland. Nagaland is dry; Mizoram and Manipur have their own liquor rules. No drones near borders.
