Land of the dawn-lit mountains
India's largest and least-crowded Northeastern state rises from Assam's plains to the eastern Himalaya. This is the land of the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery, the high Sela pass, orange orchards at Dambuk, the Apatani rice-and-fish valley of Ziro, and dozens of tribes. It rewards travellers who plan ahead — every visitor needs a permit.

India's largest monastery (1680s), the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, reached over the 13,700-ft Sela pass, now bypassed by an all-weather tunnel.

Sela Pass & Madhuri Lake
High-altitude lakes and snow on the road to Tawang; the 2024 Sela tunnel keeps it open through winter.

Getting there
By air. Itanagar's Donyi Polo (Hollongi) airport, opened 2022, links Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and Mumbai. Pasighat and Tezu have Alliance Air flights. Many still fly to Guwahati and drive.
By rail. Naharlagun (near Itanagar) has trains from Delhi and Guwahati; Bhalukpong is the railhead for the Tawang road.
By road. The classic route is Guwahati/Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Sela tunnel → Tawang, a 12–16 hr drive done over two days. A good vehicle and driver are essential.

Every visitor needs a permit: Indians an Inner Line Permit (apply online), foreigners a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator.

Try: Thukpa and momos, Apong (rice beer), Bamboo-shoot pork, Yak cheese and Monpa khura pancakes.
Budget: Mid to higher, because of distances and vehicle costs. Budget a private vehicle at ~₹3,500–5,000/day; Tawang guesthouses ₹1,500–4,000.
